The social security system in Colombia is composed of pension, health and labor risks subsystems, family fund, and other supplementary services defined by Colombian legislation.
Enrollment is mandatory for all dependent and independent workers.
- Health: The Social Security System in Colombia aims to regulate essential public health services and ensure access for all residents. According to local regulations, employers are required to contribute 8.5% of an employee’s monthly salary to the health subsystem. The employee is responsible for contributing 4%, making a total of 12.5% of the employee’s monthly salary towards their health insurance.
- Labor risks: The labor risk subsystem aims to prevent, protect, and assist employees in case of work-related accidents or illnesses. It covers risks of death and disability. Employers are fully responsible for paying the contributions, which are determined based on the class and degree of risk associated with the employee’s specific job. Failure to provide this coverage may result in the employer being directly liable for all expenses related to labor risks and facing sanctions from local authorities.
- Payroll contributions: Employers in Colombia have a legal obligation to pay three different types of payroll taxes. These include contributions to the Family Fund, which supports employees with recreation, education, sports, culture, or tourism services, amounting to 4% of the monthly payroll. Employers are also required to contribute 2% of the monthly payroll to SENA, a national apprentice entity, and 3% of the monthly payroll to ICBF, a national entity that provides comprehensive care programs for children and adolescents. In total, these contributions amount to 9% of the monthly payroll and are calculated as a percentage of the company’s monthly payroll.
